Understanding the NEA Process
🫂 What support can parents/carers provide?
Parents/carers can support students by encouraging them to plan NEAs well in advance, use properly referenced sources, submit work on time, and adhere to plagiarism rules. For students who tend to procrastinate, parents can help by discussing planning strategies and setting up a To Do list to manage coursework effectively.
Since NEA tasks are often extensive and time-consuming, students need a system to track their progress and meet deadlines. Parents/carers should encourage students to start work early, allowing teachers to provide feedback on plans and drafts. This early start is particularly crucial for distance learners who face strict deadlines and regulations, so parents should check in with learners regularly and gently nudge them along if they are flagging.
When students encounter difficulties, parents/carers should prompt them to consult their teachers. Parents can suggest relevant books or discuss effective online research methods. They can also remind students to write clearly while keeping Assessment Objectives (AOs) in mind. However, this is the only parental assistance that students are permitted to receive.
If teachers suspect submitted work exceeds a student's typical capabilities or is significantly different from work produced previously, they will thoroughly question the student to rule out malpractice. If concerns remain, they are required to report the case to the relevant exam centre.
💬Are students allowed to quote from books or the internet?
Students can refer to research, quotations or evidence, but they must list and reference their sources. The sources might be anything – for example, books, internet sites, or television programmes. Students must not plagiarise, copy, purchase essays or collude with anyone else. This is cheating and could lead to them being disqualified.
Students should use their own words as much as possible. If they do want to quote or refer to others' work, remind them to use quotation marks and provide appropriate references. If students are unsure on how to reference different sources, then teachers can provide examples of good referencing. Referencing sources correctly is essential to avoid malpractice.
🔍How is malpractice detected?
Nexus Educate Teachers scrutinise NEAs throughout the drafting process and have regular discussions with students about their work. By the time the NEA process begins, we know students well and are familiar with their abilities, previous work and writing style. As a result, it is easy to spot if students did not do the work unaided or if the work was copied from another source. We also utilise plagiarism and AI checking software as part of our marking and moderation process, and most online providers will have a similar way of working so they can reliably authenticate work.
Please speak to students about the importance of academic honesty and ensure they follow the rules. This will ensure that they receive a grade of which they can be proud and sets them up for the next stages of the learning journey.
😟What happens if a student breaks the rules?
There are several potential consequences. The exam board determines appropriate action, which may include receiving no mark for the work, disqualification from part or all of the qualification, or being barred from entering qualifications with that exam board for a specific period.
➡️In conclusion,
Coursework requires time, effort and commitment. For some specifications, it forms a substantial part of students' final grades. At Nexus Educate, we believe it can be fairer and more accurate than exam-based assessment, but, in recent years, rapid technological advancement has meant its future hangs in the balance. It is essential that everyone involved in the NEA process follows the documented rules and the spirit of this approach to ensure it continues to be an option for home-educated students in the future.
