Communications

Film and Media Classes

GCSE CLASSES

The Media permeates our lives. It influences our culture, shapes our politics and impacts our views and values. In our Communications classes, students gain a deeper understanding of the role of film and media in society and learn how to decode film and media texts and interpret layers of meaning, and the skills to produce sophisticated film and media products of their own.

Designed for students eager to engage critically and creatively with Film and Media, our communications courses are incredibly useful for the multitude of careers on offer in one of the fastest-growing industries on the planet. Despite being labelled as 'soft' subjects in popular discourse, film and media courses are rich in content and academically rigorous. They are also great fun!

No prior study in the field is necessary; a genuine interest in the subject is essential.

MEDIA STUDIES GCSE

In our Media Studies GCSE Class, we explore a variety of media forms and engage critically with a range of important media theories, issues and debates. We evaluate the power and influence of media industries and audiences and their role and influence on culture, politics and society. Students also produce a practical production project (NEA) which accounts for 30% of the qualification.

FILM STUDIES GCSE

In this class, we explore the world of film and analyse it from a critical perspective. We cover the codes and conventions of genre, the influence of contexts and how film form such as cinematography and editing make meaning and generate spectator response. Students also produce a practical production project (NEA) which accounts for 30% of the qualification.

A LEVEL CLASSES

Making the transition from GCSE to A Level is like taking the stabilisers off your bike. You've been riding comfortably with structure and support, but now it's time to pedal independently, gaining balance and momentum as you go.

This period can be daunting for some students, but at Nexus Educate, we provide a range of tools to make the shift as smooth as possible. Our A Level courses are designed to be both reactive and adaptive. With each assignment, students receive detailed feedback and personalised guidance that reassures and builds confidence. This tailored support ensures students stay balanced and confident, giving them the courage to move forward independently, secure in the knowledge that they are on the right path.

MEDIA STUDIES A LEVEL

On this course, students study a variety of media forms and engage critically with a range of media theories, issues and debates. We explore media industries and audiences and the ways in which media artefacts function as products to be sold and texts to be read. We also examine the role and influence of the media historically and in contemporary society, culture and politics. Students then apply their theoretical knowledge and understanding to construct a practical production to a set brief which accounts for 30% of the qualification.

FILM STUDIES A LEVEL

On this course, students study a range of films from around the world, gain a historical perspective on film and analyse the macro and micro features of film form. The course covers the codes and conventions of different genres, how genres change, how the contexts in which films are produced affect film ideology and reception and how elements such as cinematography and editing make meaning. Students also produce a practical production project (NEA) in the form of a short film or screenplay which accounts for 30% of the qualification.
