‘Children’s reading must be supported throughout their time at school to help them succeed across the curriculum.’ The National Literacy Trust

This course is designed for students in Year 9 (or equivalent) who are preparing to begin IGCSE or GCSE English Language and/or Literature. It provides a vital bridge between Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, offering the time and space to refine core literacy skills before formal exam preparation begins.

Through carefully chosen texts and guided analytical tasks, students develop greater fluency, critical thinking, and confidence. Lessons make explicit links to IGCSE English while retaining the flexibility and breadth of a reading-rich, discussion-led curriculum.

🗂️ WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

In our small, supportive online classes, students will:

📖 Read confidently and critically across genres

💬 Explore multiple interpretations of texts

🔩 Build vocabulary and strengthen grammar

🔍 Analyse structure, language, and authorial choices

🧰 Develop a secure English ‘toolbox’ for GCSE success

✍️ Practice extended writing and thoughtful expression

📚 Gain exposure to themes, contexts, and characterisation in more complex texts

📋 Receive individual feedback and next-step guidance

👤 WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

  • Year 9 students preparing to begin IGCSE or GCSE English

  • Home-educated learners ready to deepen their skills

  • Students who need to consolidate core literacy before Key Stage 4

  • Learners who enjoy literature and want to read more widely and analytically

No formal prior knowledge of IGCSE is needed—just a willingness to read, reflect, and engage.

Classes are led by a qualified teacher and experienced home educator in a supportive, encouraging environment.

This course eases the move from Key Stage 3 to the rigour of IGCSE by introducing GCSE-level reading, writing, and critical thinking in a structured yet supportive way. We review key areas of grammar, expand vocabulary, and refine expression—while building confidence in extended writing and interpretation.
