‘The media's the most powerful entity on earth… they control the minds of the masses.’ Malcolm X
Media surrounds us. It shapes the way we see the world—and the way the world sees us. From news headlines to music videos and TikTok trends to blockbuster movies, media studies helps students understand how meaning is made and how messages are shaped.
On this course, we explore a wide range of media forms, including film, advertising, television, music videos, online content, magazines, newspapers, and video games. We learn how they work—how images, words, sound and stories are constructed—and why they matter.
Students also get the opportunity to create their own media work through a coursework project (NEA), which allows them to put theory into practice and develop their own creative voice.
🗂️ WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
In our small, live, interactive online classes, students will:
🎬 Explore the language of media—how it communicates messages through images, sound, layout and editing
👥 Analyse representation—how people, places and ideas are shown, and why this matters
🌐 Study media industries and audiences—how media is produced, who it’s for, and how it shapes public opinion
🖥️ Investigate media contexts—including social, political, historical and cultural influences
🎨 Take part in a creative NEA project—producing their own cross-media work in response to a brief
Students will develop skills in analysis, comparison writing and evaluation — all of which support success in English, humanities, and creative subjects.
