'Now more than ever we need to talk to each other, to listen to each other and understand how we see the world, and cinema is the best medium for doing this.' Martin Scorsese.
Film is one of the most powerful art forms of the modern age—shaping how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. It tells stories, sparks debate, explores culture, and captures history. Studying film is not just entertaining—it’s empowering.
On this course, students learn how meaning is created on screen. We explore key aspects of film form and analyse how narrative, sound, lighting, performance, and editing work together to engage audiences. We also examine how film reflects and shapes values, beliefs, and identities—and students have the opportunity to create a screenplay or film extract of their own.
🗂️ WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
In our live, interactive, small-group classes, students will:
🎞️ Explore genres such as sci-fi, drama, comedy, and action
📽️ Analyse film form: camera work, editing, sound, and mise-en-scène
🌍 Understand historical, cultural, political, and technological contexts
🧠 Investigate representation and ideology in film
✍️ Practise screenwriting and creative production
📝 Build skills in analysis, essay writing, and critical reflection
All resources are designed to build confidence and deepen understanding—while making space for creativity and discussion.
